Masters champion Zach Johnson hoped to jump into contention Friday at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill. Instead, he missed the cut.

Johnson shot an even-par 71 for a 36-hole total of 141, 11 behind leader Nathan Green and one off the cut, leaving the event without its main attraction.

“Obviously disappointing,” Johnson said. “This is one of those jobs, if you will, that you’ve got to get over pretty quick. I’m accustomed to that. I never like missing cuts, especially by a shot.”

Green took the lead with a seven-under 63 that had him one stroke in front of Jason Dufner (66) and Carl Pettersson (64). First-round leader Neal Lancaster (68) was two strokes back.

Green, seeking his first PGA Tour victory, took the lead on 17 when he made a four-foot putt for birdie -- his eighth of the day -- to go 12 under.

With many of the top golfers overseas preparing for next week’s British Open, the Deere Classic attracted a field full of unknowns. One exception was Johnson, a two-time winner this year, including the year’s first major.

He ended the round with a flourish, sending a 153-yard approach within a few feet of the cup to set up a birdie on the par-four 18th.

Also missing the cut were Lee Janzen (even), John Daly (six over) and defending champion John Senden (seven over).

Mickelson said he was fortunate to shoot a 68, because “I wasn’t hitting it where I wanted to.”

Colin Montgomerie, who won the European Open on Sunday, shot a three-over 74 and missed a cut the week before the British Open for the first time in his career. Retief Goosen, Miguel Angel Jimenez and David Howell also missed the cut.

“A lot of everything -- a lot of good shots, a lot of horrible shots, a lot of good putts, a lot of horrible putts. Very much a combination,” said Stadler, who has broken 70 only four times in his last 21 rounds.
