Maddux roughed up by Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks found a familiar cure for their hitting woes -- future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux.

Rookie Jeff Salazar had three hits and made a spectacular catch to rob Brian Giles of a home run as the Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres, 8-3, on Friday night, improving to 10-1 all-time against Maddux.

And that doesn’t include two victories over him in the 2001 National League championship series, when he pitched for Atlanta. Maddux, 10th on the all-time list with 340 victories, has a winning record against every other NL team.

Doug Davis (6-10) yielded two runs in six innings as Arizona ended a five-game losing streak and pulled to within 2 1/2 games of the first-place Padres in the West Division.

The Diamondbacks’ offense had sputtered during a 2-8 trip entering the All-Star break. But that changed against Maddux (7-7), who gave up four runs and nine hits in four innings, his second-shortest start.
