Chris Young gave up two hits in seven innings, and Brian Giles’ run-scoring double provided all the offense San Diego needed in the Padres’ 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night.

Young (9-3) did not allow a runner to reach third base as he struck out six and issued three walks, all to Ryan Howard. Young lowered his major-league-leading earned-run average to 1.85 as he won his fifth decision in a row.

Heath Bell worked the eighth before Trevor Hoffman finished the four-hitter for his 27th save in 29 chances and the 509th of his career. The Padres have 14 shutouts, tops in the majors.

The Padres had only three hits and won for the fifth time this season with three or fewer hits. Young has started all five games that the Padres have won 1-0.

The San Diego right-hander barely outpitched fellow All-Star Cole Hamels (11-5), who gave up one run and two hits over seven innings. The left-hander walked one and struck out three.

San Diego got the decisive run in the third inning on a one-out single by Geoff Blum, who was sacrificed to second by Young. Giles then hit a run-scoring double down the left-field line.

Chase Utley had both of Philadelphia’s hits against Young. He singled with one out in the fourth and stole second base.

After a walk to Howard, Young retired Aaron Rowand on a fly ball and got Pat Burrell to ground out.

In the sixth, Utley hit a two-out double down the right-field line. Howard followed with his third walk before Rowand flew out to right.
