HIT AND MISS

* Hit: Having burrowed into the weeds right of the green on No. 1 with an approach that struck a spectator on her thigh, Sergio Garcia seemed set to undo some of his grand doings of the first round, in which he shot 65. With his wedge doubling as magic wand, he sent out a little aria that fled the weeds, plunked down on the greenside grass and then rolled to within tap-in range. He saved par, then declined to rank it among his favorite shots. “It was a nice shot,” he said.

* Miss: The Barry Burn, the creek that affects maybe eight holes depending on skill level, turns up at No. 1 more remotely than others, well left of the fairway. Yet the par-four, 406-yard hole that showcased Garcia’s artistry also had the day’s most notable clunker when Tiger Woods found that burn off the tee. By the time he disgustedly took the left hand off his club, the ball would dribble into the water, mandate a do-over from the tee, and lead to a double-bogey six.
