* Boston 1, at Cleveland 0: Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched seven shutout innings to outduel C.C. Sabathia, denying Cleveland’s ace his 14th win, as the Red Sox won their fifth straight. Matsuzaka (12-7) gave up four hits before turning it over to the bullpen.

* at Toronto 7, Minnesota 0: Vernon Wells drove in four runs, Dustin McGowan won consecutive starts for the first time since early June and Toronto matched its longest winning streak of the season at four. Toronto blanked its opponent for the third time in four games and raised its season shutout total to eight. Minnesota has lost three straight and 12 of 21. The Twins haven’t scored in 12 consecutive innings.

* New York 9, at Kansas City 4: Derek Jeter had four hits, New York batted around in both the first and second innings and the Yankees extended their winning streak to five games as Chien-Ming Wang (11-5) won for the eighth time in nine decisions.

* at Chicago 5-8, Detroit 3-7: A.J. Pierzynski hit a single that hopped past Tigers shortstop Carlos Guillen, allowing the go-ahead run to score in the eighth inning in Game 2 of a doubleheader sweep. The White Sox won the opener behind Paul Konerko’s two-run homer. The White Sox trailed, 7-1, in the second game before rallying, with the big blow being Jim Thome’s three-run homer off Chad Durbin in the seventh.

* at Baltimore 3, Tampa Bay 0: Daniel Cabrera pitched seven innings of one-hit ball to earn his first win since June 22. Cabrera (7-10) walked five and struck out three. The lone hit against the right-hander came in the fourth inning.

* at Texas 2-4, Seattle 1-3: Rangers closer Eric Gagne saved both games, and the Mariners have lost five straight games since getting within one game of the AL West-leading Angels.

* Oakland 4, at Angels 3: Travis Buck had four hits and drove in three runs for the A’s.
