Two domesticated elephants rampaged through several villages in northeastern India, killing eight people and injuring five others before being shot dead by police, officials said.

Police were searching for the owners and trying to establish what caused the violent behavior. Angry villagers protesting the lack of protection burned a local forestry office.

The rampage occurred Wednesday near the border of Assam and Mizoram states, an official in the area said.
