Leake is too tough for Riverside

Freshman right-hander Mike Leake pitched top-seeded Arizona State to a 9-2 victory over second-seeded UC Riverside on Saturday night in a second-round game of the NCAA Division I regional at Winkles Field in Tempe, Ariz.

Leake (13-1) pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 in leading the Pacific 10 Conference-champion Sun Devils (45-13) past Big West Conference-champion Riverside (38-20).

Sophomore right-hander Matt Montgomery (5-1) yielded seven hits and four runs in six innings for the Highlanders.

Riverside will play Nebraska (31-26) in an elimination game today, with the winner playing Arizona State for the regional title. The Cornhuskers eliminated Monmouth, N.J., 6-5.

Sophomore right-hander Scott Gorgen pitched his third consecutive complete game, holding top-seeded Texas to five hits in leading second-seeded UC Irvine to a 3-1 victory at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas.

The Anteaters (42-15-1) will play the winner of this morning’s game between Texas (45-16) and Wake Forest (34-28) at 4 p.m. Gorgen (11-2) yielded only two hits after Bradley Suttle’s home run in the third inning.

Derek McCallum’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th gave Minnesota a 6-5 victory over top-seeded San Diego in an elimination game at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego. The Gophers (41-17) blew a 5-0 lead in the ninth. Logan Gelbrich’s three-run homer helped the Toreros (43-18) tie the score.

Bill Rhinehart hit for the cycle for the second time this season and drove in four runs to help Arizona (42-15) beat New Orleans, 9-8, at Wichita, Kan.... John Scaglione, David Adams and Beau Seabury hit consecutive RBI singles in the top of the 13th inning to give Virginia a 7-4 win over Oregon State (39-18) at Charlottesville, Va.
