Mickelson to rest his wrist

Phil Mickelson withdrew from the PGA Tour’s Stanford St. Jude’s Championship that begins Thursday in Memphis, Tenn., because of his left wrist that he injured nine days ago.

Mickelson will receive a cortisone shot. He saw a doctor Tuesday in San Diego and made the decision to rest his wrist, with the U.S. Open coming up next week at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.

Mickelson injured his wrist chipping balls out of the rough during a practice session May 28 at Oakmont.

Arizona beats Tennessee to force decisive game

Pinch-runner Danielle Rodriguez beat the throw home on Adrienne Acton’s groundout in the 10th inning as Arizona beat Tennessee, 1-0, extending the Women’s College World Series to a decisive third game tonight in Oklahoma City.

Volunteers catcher Shannon Doepking was unable to tag Rodriguez before Rodriguez swept her hand down to break Monica Abbott’s 43-inning scoreless streak in the postseason.

Arizona starter Taryne Mowatt (41-12) stranded 14 Tennessee runners, pitching out of a bases-loaded situation with nobody out in the fifth.

Oregon State defeated Virginia, 7-3, in a regional final at Charlottesville, Va., to keep alive hopes of defending its national baseball championship.

Oregon State will play host to Michigan (42-17) in a best-of-three super regional starting Saturday.

Cal State Fullerton will play host to UCLA and UC Irvine will travel to Wichita State in other super regionals beginning Saturday.

The first Fullerton-UCLA game will start at 4 p.m., with Sunday’s game at 7 p.m. and Monday’s game, if needed, at 4 p.m.

All of the games will be televised by ESPN or ESPN2.

The Irvine-Wichita State opener will be at 9 a.m., with Sunday and Monday games at either 9:30 a.m. or 4 p.m. on ESPN or ESPN2.

The Pacific 10 Conference women’s basketball tournament will be played at the Galen Center in 2009 and 2010, the conference announced. Next year’s tournament will be played in San Jose.

UCLA senior driver Kelly Rulon was named winner of the Peter J. Cutino award, given to the nation’s top collegiate water polo player.

FOOTBALL

Assistant Wristen is leaving UCLA

John Wristen resigned as the tight ends/special teams coach at UCLA to pursue the head coaching vacancy at Colorado State-Pueblo, a Division II team. He spent one season at UCLA.

Wristen is the 10th assistant coach to leave the team in the last two years.

UCLA’s opener at Stanford will start at 12:30 p.m. and be televised by Fox Sports Net. FSN will also televise UCLA’s Oct. 27 game at Washington State beginning at 3:30 p.m. Versus will televise the Bruins’ home opener against Brigham Young on Sept. 8 beginning at 3:30 p.m.

USC’s Sept. 1 home opener against Idaho will start at 7:15 p.m. and be televised by FSN, which will also broadcast the Trojans’ Oct. 27 at Oregon beginning at noon. USC’s Oct. 6 home game against Stanford will be televised by Versus beginning at 4 p.m.

Trent Green could be a member of the Miami Dolphins by this weekend. The Dolphins reportedly agreed to terms with Kansas City on a trade for the quarterback. Green will undergo a physical and if he passes, the trade will be completed.

JURISPRUDENCE

Bengals’ Thurman is under investigation

Suspended Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman has been accused of kicking and hitting two men in his Georgia hometown during the weekend. He has not been charged with a crime, but a magistrate will hear testimony Friday to determine if charges should be filed.

No charges were filed against a 33-year-old St. Paul, Minn., woman arrested in the beating death of former Villanova basketball star Howard Porter. She was released from jail.

MISCELLANY

Rags To Riches to run in Belmont

Trainer Todd Pletcher said Rags To Riches, the filly he trains for owners Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, will participate in the 1 1/2 -mile Belmont against Preakness winner Curlin and five other horses Saturday. Entries will be taken for the race today.

The Kings named Michael Futa and Mark Yannetti co-directors of amateur scouting. Futa spent the last five seasons as general manager of the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League and was named OHL executive of the year in 2005. Yannetti has been an amateur scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs since 2004. The Kings also named Chad Smith strength and conditioning coach.
