Moreland leads Mississippi State, 8-6

Mitch Moreland hit a two-run homer within minutes of being selected in the major league draft on Friday, leading Mississippi State to an 8-6 victory over Clemson in the opener of their NCAA Division I super regional at Starkville, Miss.

The Bulldogs (37-20) need one more win in the best-of-three series against the Tigers (41-22) to advance to the College World Series.

Moreland, taken in the 17th round by Texas, hit his sixth-inning homer against Daniel Moskos (3-6), who was the fourth overall pick by Pittsburgh.

Rice 3, Texas A&M; 2 -- Jordan Dodson singled home Danny Lehmann in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Owls (53-12) over the Aggies (48-18) at Houston.

With two out, Lehmann singled and got into scoring position when Joe Savery walked. Dodson, who scored the tying run with two out in the ninth, then singled to left.

North Carolina 9, South Carolina 6 -- Reid Fronk singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh to complete the Tar Heels’ rally from a six-run deficit at Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Tar Heels (52-12) tied the score on Jeff Jeffords’ two-out walk with the bases loaded to No. 9 hitter Garrett Gore.

Fronk then singled off second baseman Travis Jones’ glove to made it 7-6.

Louisville 9, Oklahoma State 0 -- Isaiah Howes, Chris Dominguez and Pete Rodriguez homered, and Zach Pitts yielded only four hits in seven innings to lead the Cardinals (45-21) past the Cowboys (41-20) at Louisville, Ky.
