Posh’s pitch is outside strike zone

Just a hunch, but David Beckham might never be anywhere near as big in Los Angeles as he is overseas.

His wife, Victoria Beckham, threw out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium on Monday, and it made a splash on the other side of the pond.

In London, the Daily Mail website featured eight photos of Posh Spice turned Sporty in a Dodgers jacket and shorts.

The London Paper, a free tabloid, contrasted her point-by-point with Roger Clemens, making this assessment of her stance: “Hopeless. Body facing batsman, knees knocking, elbows akimbo, throwing arm out front. Oh, and completely inappropriate footwear.”

Even Down Under, they were all over it.

“Victoria bends it like Beckham,” wrote Australia’s Herald Sun.

Trivia time

When Geoff Ogilvy won the U.S. Open last year, he became the first Australian to win a major championship in more than a decade.

Who was the previous Aussie to win a major?

She loves the lad

Victoria Beckham is a lot like us in some ways: She recently told OK! Magazine she’d choose her husband over the posh life and she wishes work didn’t keep them apart so much.

“Sometimes I see a couple who’ve just finished work, sitting in their car, and she’s got a Barclay’s bank badge on and he’s got his Dixon’s badge on, and they’re going home for dinner,” she told the magazine. “Sometimes that looks nice to me, but we all want something we don’t have.

“I can’t do without love,” she added. “I would rather live in a council flat with David than in Beckingham! Palace without him.”

Those of us who thought that should be a “u” in Beckingham probably don’t know precisely what a council flat is, either ... but we read about the digs the Beckhams have chosen for his stint with the Galaxy, and we don’t think a council flat would go for $22 million, even in Beverly Hills.

So demanding

Today’s Kobe Bryant item, from the satirical site TheOnion.com: “I also demand to be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the end of the season; a deal for my own shoe with Nike, Reebok, Adidas, and Starbury; and that everyone love me. Now.”

How to get into Duke

So you think your youngster might be good enough to earn an athletic scholarship? Choose the sport wisely, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said.

An analysis of data from the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics and the National Federation of State High School Assns. suggested an athlete’s best chance to play in college is in the sport of lacrosse, based on the numbers of high school and college participants. There is one college lacrosse player for every eight high school players.

An athlete stands a decent chance of going from high school to college in some other sports: women’s soccer (one in 12) and men’s and women’s swimming (one in 13).

Longest odds: wrestling (one in 37), men’s basketball (one in 27) and women’s basketball (one in 25).

And finally...

Ogilvy, the defending U.S. Open champion, was asked about a report he shot an 85 and lost half a dozen golf balls last week in a practice round at the site of this year’s Open, Oakmont Country Club. “That’s an exaggeration. I think I shot 83 and lost two.”
