Stevie Wonderboy, beset by ankle problems, is retired

Stevie Wonderboy, the 2-year-old champion of 2005, has been retired and will be a stallion in 2008 at Airdrie Stud in Midway, Ky.

Owned by Merv Griffin and trained by Doug O’Neill, the son of Stephen Got Even has been plagued by ankle problems for more than a year and the decision was finally made to end his racing career.

Purchased for $100,000 at a 2-year-old in-training sale in Florida, Stevie Wonderboy clinched his Eclipse Award with a come-from-behind win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Belmont Park. That victory came after he had won the Del Mar Futurity.

A winner of three of six with earnings of $1,058,940, Stevie Wonderboy made only one start as a 3-year-old, finishing second to Brother Derek in the San Rafael at Santa Anita.
