A closer look at tuition plan

Re “UC, Cal State approve fee hikes,” March 15 and “Hike in Boalt Hall fees urged,” March 12

Regarding student fees at the University of California, there are two points that I’d like to clarify.

First, both articles said that I proposed raising student fees by 16% for each of the next five years. My actual plan was to match our fees to market levels -- minus a $5,000 subsidy -- which would have brought the fee hike to roughly 13% for each of the next five years.

Second, while it is true that the regents approved an increase of 10% for selected professional schools including Boalt Hall, this action comes after the abolition of a temporary education fee of $1,050. The net result for our students is that the total bill will rise by 5% for residents and roughly 3% for nonresidents.

I now understand that not only do I support the California university system in taxes, but when I pay tuition for my sons at UC Berkeley and UC Riverside, I am paying financial aid for other students. I am taxed twice for my efforts as a parent.
