City to use condemnation powers to buy properties
Despite protests from existing tenants, the City Council decided Tuesday to use condemnation powers to buy properties at 256 S. Main St. and 249 S. Los Angeles St. to build a parking garage and motor-transport yard to serve a new police headquarters building.
A representative for business tenants said the use of condemnation powers was not justified and would add unnecessary costs to the city project.
Councilwoman Jan Perry said an art gallery and food stand on the site would be encouraged to relocate into retail space on the first floor of the parking garage.
