Steamed over the water bond

Re “Water bond may be tapped for many uses,” May 21

After reading this article, it is virtually guaranteed that I will never vote for a bond issue again. While many of the projects mentioned in the article may have merit, they do not meet the public health and safety criteria of shoring up our levees, decontaminating waterways and building reservoirs, all for which I believed this bond issue was intended. I do not appreciate being deceived.

State Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-Los Angeles) is reported as saying that voters were “quite conscious” that millions of dollars would “be aimed at these sort of projects” when they approved the water bond in November. This arrogant, dismissive remark irritates me no end. As one who voted for the water projects, I assumed that the money would go toward securing our levee system. I certainly had no clue that money could possibly go to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, or to build an aquarium in Fresno, or to build a museum in Palm Springs.

With Hurricane Katrina damage still vivid in my mind, to have state officials propose some of these projects is outrageous. Safety must come first.
