The Cleveland Indians were hoping to simply win a series in Detroit and leave with a lead in the Central Division.

Cleveland surpassed its goals.

Ryan Garko hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Casey Blake hit a solo shot in the fifth to lift the Indians to a 5-3 win and a three-game sweep of the Tigers on Sunday night.

Fausto Carmona (6-1) gave up three runs and nine hits over seven innings. He hasn’t lost or given up more than three runs since losing in his first start this season.

The Indians started the series trailing Detroit by half a game. They now lead the division by a season-high 2 1/2 -games.

“You work hard to try to win a series, but when you are coming in here you don’t expect anything beyond that,” Manager Eric Wedge said. “We came out on top this time, but it’s not going to be any easier when they come in next weekend.”

The Indians and Tigers play 15 more times this season, including a four-game series that starts Thursday night in Cleveland.
