Pasadena Playhouse to show Broadway-bound ‘Vanities’
“Vanities,” a new musical by Jack Heifner based on his long-running 1976 off-Broadway play that follows three Texas women coming of age in the 1960s and ‘70s, will make its pre-Broadway bow at the Pasadena Playhouse next summer.
Two-time Tony Award-winner Judith Ivey will direct the musical, which will play Aug. 29 to Sept. 28 in Pasadena before a planned fall opening on Broadway.
Music and lyrics are by David Kirshenbaum, whose other shows include “Summer of ‘42” and “Party Come Here.”
“Vanities” was originally produced at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto in 2006 and showcased at the 2006 National Alliance for Musical Theatre Festival of New Musicals.
The Pasadena Playhouse also announced that two other shows have been added to its 2008 season: a staging of John Steinbeck’s classic “Of Mice and Men” (May 9-June 8), to be directed by Paul Lazarus, and George Bernard Shaw’s comedy of morality, sexuality and justice “Mrs. Warren’s Profession” (July 4-Aug. 3).
The three productions join the previously announced “Orson’s Shadow,” written by Austin Pendleton and conceived by Judith Auberjonois (Jan. 18-Feb. 17), and the world premiere of “Mask,” a musical by writer Anna Hamilton Phelan, composer Barry Mann and lyricist Cynthia Weil, based on the Universal film (March 14-April 13).
The final production of the season, slated for October, will be announced at a later date.
