Bail is increased for suspect in O.C. student’s disappearance
A suspect in the disappearance of a Rancho Santa Margarita college student had his bail on an unrelated criminal charge doubled Tuesday to $500,000.
John Steven Burgess, 35, is being held in a Los Angeles jail on a charge of failing to register as a sex offender.
O.C. authorities have named Burgess a suspect in the disappearance of Donna Jou, 19, who was last seen by family June 23 when Burgess picked her up for a date. He has not been charged in the case. Burgess was arrested in Florida last month carrying fake identification, police said.
Prosecutors consider him a flight risk and had asked Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Amy D. Hogue to increase Burgess’ bail to $1 million.
