South Carolina defeats Kentucky
South Carolina defensive end Eric Norwood tied an NCAA mark with two touchdown returns and Steve Spurrier improved to 15-0 all-time against No. 8 Kentucky in the 11th-ranked Gamecocks’ 38-23 victory Thursday night at Columbia, S.C.
The Gamecocks, 5-1 overall, 3-1 in the Southeastern Conference, forced Wildcats quarterback Andre Woodson into several errors.
It was the poorest performance of the season for Kentucky (5-1, 1-1), which was held to half its SEC-leading average of 46.6 points a game.
Woodson fumbled after Jonathan Williams’ sack on Kentucky’s first series, and Norwood picked it up for a two-yard touchdown return that put the Gamecocks ahead. With the score tied, 10-10, in the second quarter, Woodson drove Kentucky to the Gamecocks’ nine but threw his second pass for an interception of the season to end the threat.
Michigan won’t have to forfeit any games for using an ineligible freshman player.
Michigan last month reported an administrative error involving safety Artis Chambers to the Big Ten. Chambers played in three games, including a 14-9 victory over Penn State, but wasn’t eligible under the conference’s freshman rules.
He will keep his athletic scholarship and can continue practicing with the team, but he will miss the rest of the season, the university said.
