SACRAMENTO -- Addressing a shortage of public safety personnel, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation Friday lifting a requirement that Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies hired before April 1997 retire at age 60.

The bill by state Sen. Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) could help a department budgeted for 800 more deputies than it has been able to hire. It responds to concerns by Sheriff Lee Baca that able-bodied deputies were being forced off the job unreasonably.
