From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Dusty Baker was hired as manager of the Cincinnati Reds, agreeing to a three-year deal Saturday with a team coming off its seventh consecutive losing season and looking for stability at the top.

Baker, 58, worked as a television analyst for a year after the Chicago Cubs fired him after the 2006 season. The Reds decided to go for someone who knows the NL Central and has been to the World Series as a manager.

The team didn’t make an announcement Saturday, but a person within the organization with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed the Reds had reached the agreement with Baker.

Venus Williams loses to Pennetta in Thailand

Venus Williams was upset by Flavia Pennetta, 6-4, 7-6 (8), on Saturday in the semifinals of the Bangkok Open in Thailand, losing three set points.

“I just want to enjoy this moment,” Pennetta said. “This is one of my most beautiful wins.”

Top-seeded James Blake lost to Thomas Johansson, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3), in the semifinals of the Stockholm Open, a defeat that ended the two-time defending champion’s 13-match winning streak in the tournament.

Johansson, who saved five match points in his last two service games, will play seventh-seeded Ivo Karlovic in today’s final. Karlovic defeated fourth-seeded Tommy Haas, 6-4, 6-3.

This was Johansson’s second straight victory over Blake in Sweden. He beat him in a Davis Cup singles match last month when the United States won the semifinals against Sweden.
