How bad are things going for Florida...

How bad are things going for Florida International (0-6)? The NCAA recently contended that the university allowed 40 ineligible student-athletes to compete dating to 2002. One footballer even played during his sixth year of eligibility (the old-timer was not identified).

All this at a school with a 14-46 football record in its six years of having a team. In other words, Florida International can’t even recruit good sham students.

The Golden Panthers -- or Panters, as they’re known -- were idle last week (as they are every week) but will be hard-pressed to stay atop the Bottom Ten. They’ll have to lose to Louisiana Monroe, which won’t be easy inasmuch as the latter is 1-5.

No. 2 Colorado State and No. 3 Utah State, which are each in a bad state, are waiting for the chance to dethrone Florida International, as are the never-say-live SMUs (1-5).

The next 10: 11. Louisiana Monroe (1-5); 12. Houston (2-4); 13. Poor Ole Miss (2-5); 14. North Carolina State (1-5); 15. North Carolina (2-5); 16. Washington State (2-5); 17. Arizona (2-5); 18. Wisconsin (worst 5-2 team ever); 19t. Columbia (1-4) and UCLA (still winless in October).

*Not the comic strip.

Rout of the week: Iowa State (1-6) vs. Oklahoma (6-1) (Parents are urged not to permit their children to view this slaughter.)

Crummy game of the week: Notre Dame (1-6) vs. USC (5-1) (Program note: originally scheduled as rout of the week before USC’s collapse.)

Game the Trojans dread: Looks as though USC will be an 84-point underdog against Oregon State on Nov. 3. Why? Well, Oregon State won by 17 over Utah. Utah won by 38 over UCLA. UCLA won by 28 over Stanford. And Stanford, of course, won by one over USC. Do the math, if you dare, Trojans fans.
