Schilling still worth an edge for Boston

Supporters of the Boston Red Sox have to feel pretty good about their chances in tonight’s Game 6 with 40-year-old pitcher Curt Schilling on the mound to face the Cleveland Indians, who have a 3-2 lead in the American League Championship Series.

Schilling, who has a 9-2 record in 17 career postseason starts with a 2.23 earned-run average, is the main reason the Red Sox are favored at -126 to -130 to send the series to seven games.

But Schilling, 10-8 with a 3.87 ERA this season (including the playoffs), is far from a sure lock.

People willing to wager on the Indians, who split the first two games at Fenway Park, should be encouraged by Schilling’s less-than-stellar record at home. Boston is 1-3 in Schilling’s last four starts at home, including Game 2’s shaky effort when he gave up nine hits and five runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Want more? On the season, Schilling has a 4-3 home record with a 4.36 ERA with 14 of his 22 home runs given up, and he has been less than effective at night. In non-day games, Schilling is 6-6 with a 4.47 ERA.

Cleveland will start right-hander Fausto Carmona against Schilling, and the Indians have a few things working in their favor. Cleveland has lost only two games in a row once since Sept. 7, and the Indians are 4-0 in their last four starts as road underdogs when Carmona has started.

With a 2-4 record, Nevada has been anything but a football power, but the Wolf Pack has been a force this week in Las Vegas action.

Nevada is a seven-point road favorite today against Utah State, which has lost 12 in a row and 17 of its last 18 games. According to Sportsbook.com’s betting trend, the Wolf Pack has attracted 94% of the bets made against the spread. Wagerline.com has Nevada picking up 74.77%.

Another off-the-main-board game to watch today will be North Texas (1-5) at Troy (4-2). The Trojans opened as 18-point favorites, but the line has climbed to 21 1/2 .

Troy is 4-1 against the spread in its last five games against a team with a losing record, and North Texas has been woeful on defense, giving up over 525 yards a game, which ranks 119th among Division I-A programs. But the Eagles are coming off a victory over Louisiana Monroe and are 3-3 against the spread.
