Hey Fox, enough ads already

Catch the Colorado Rockies in the World Series while you still have the chance (this sentence brought to you by the All New Chevy Malibu) . . .

World Series Game 3 (Saturday, 5:30 p.m., Channel 11) and Game 4 (Sunday, 5:15 p.m., Channel 11): It could be a short World Series, or not, depending on the number of snow outs yet to be booked. The shorter the better, for pretty much everyone concerned, especially viewers forced to sit through Fox’s cross-promotion insanity during Wednesday night’s Game 1.

Did you know Chevy has an All New Malibu? If you missed the virtual ad that was perpetually plastered on the Fenway Park backstop, there was always the fake crowd shot in the fifth inning when Fox aired footage of a woman wearing a Red Sox T-shirt and holding a sign for the same automobile that, if we’re lucky, goes the way of the Edsel. Chevrolet, don’t you know you don’t mess with curses around Fenway Park?

Elsewhere, Fox gave us another shot of a fan holding a sign declaring, “Manny is the next American Idol” and a “Sounds of the Game” clip of Boston’s Royce Clayton and Coco Crisp in the Red Sox dugout discussing a Taco Bell promotion. Tim McCarver’s analysis of the clip: “Shameless, but very funny.”

McCarver was half right. As usual, he talked too much.

Pac-10 Football Marathon . . .

USC at Oregon (Saturday, noon, Prime) and UCLA at Washington State (Saturday, 3:30 p.m., FSN West) and California at Arizona State (Saturday, 7 p.m., Prime): Or how to spend more than 10 consecutive hours in a coma-like state on your sofa, interrupted only by breaks for sustenance and bathroom usage and to grunt your approval or disapproval of Pete Carroll’s choice of quarterbacks, Karl Dorrell’s play-call selections and Arizona State being ranked two spots ahead of USC.

College Football Upset Special of the Weekend (which, considering the current state of college football, really wouldn’t be all that special) . . .

Ohio State at Penn State (Saturday, 5 p.m., Channel 7): Ohio State is 8-0 and ranked No. 1. Penn State is 6-2, No. 24 and playing at home. The Buckeyes are vulnerable and, considering the rest of the college football elite during the Season That Logic And Reason Forgot, overdue.

Tell Rutgers about it . . .

West Virginia at Rutgers (Saturday, 9 a.m., Channel 7): Rutgers, which upset No. 2 South Florida two weeks after being upset by No. 20 Cincinnati, goes for the upset over No. 6 West Virginia.

More potential upsets on an autumn Saturday in New Jersey . . .

Breeders’ Cup (Saturday, 9 a.m., ESPN): Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., is the site for this year’s Breeders’ Cup. Unlike Dodger Stadium in the summer and Staples Center in the winter, this place has all the horses.

Speaking of needing more horses . . .

Lakers vs. Sacramento Kings (tonight, 7, Channel 9): The Lakers, running out of ways to keep Kobe Bryant happy and on the roster, hatch a scheme: Let’s give Kobe a trip to Vegas! Yeah! That should do it!

Recommended viewing for David Beckham and friends . . .

Chivas USA at Kansas City Wizards (Saturday, 5 p.m., Prime): Believe it or not, L.A. has a Major League Soccer team that actually plays major league soccer, one that opens a two-leg playoff series against Kansas City. Chivas and the Galaxy do have one thing in common besides the Home Depot Center. Neither team received a shot-on-goal from Beckham during the MLS regular season.

Grace and poise and talent on ice. And also the Kings . . .

Skate America (Sunday, 1 p.m., Channel 4) and Edmonton Oilers at Kings (Saturday, 7 p.m., FSNW): Here are two very different uses for your basic sheet of ice inside your basic indoor rink. NBC gets the best of it, with world champion Miki Ando and U.S. champion Kimmie Meisner among the figure skaters competing at Skate America. FSNW gets stuck with another game on the Kings’ 2007-2008 regular-season schedule, also known as Lose All Over North America.

Why American football is never going to catch on in England . . .

New York Giants vs. Miami Dolphins (Sunday, 10 a.m., Channel 11): British sports fans attending this game at London’s Wembley Stadium might be unfamiliar with the details, and the teams involved. One team is quarterbacked by Peyton Manning’s little brother, the other is a very poor facsimile of a once-great NFL team. (Think Leeds United.)

Meanwhile, L.A. sports fans are faced with a different conundrum: Why does Fox insist on showing us Giants’ games every bloody weekend?

English football Game of the Week . . .

Arsenal at Liverpool (Sunday, 9 a.m., Fox Soccer Channel): Here is an interesting precedent for Lakers fans. Before this season, Arsenal’s high-scoring star Thierry Henry said he wanted out. The club accommodated Henry, selling him to Barcelona, and has since become the hottest team in the English Premier League. One problem with this precedent: The man making Arsenal’s key personnel moves is not named Mitch Kupchak.

Are we not fans? We have TiVo . . .

Florida at Georgia (Saturday, 12:30 p.m., Channel 2) and Nebraska at Texas (Saturday, 12:30 p.m., Channel 7): One game to watch and one game to tape for those wondering what happened to the last two BCS champions.

Punt . . .

Central Florida at Southern Mississippi (Sunday, 5 p.m., ESPN): You definitely have something better to do on Sunday evening, no matter what you do.
