* Philadelphia 2, at Boston 1: The Flyers’ win was marred by defenseman Randy Jones’ ferocious hit on Bruins center Patrice Bergeron. Bergeron lost consciousness and was taken from the ice on a stretcher during the first period after he was hammered face-first into the boards by Jones. Bergeron was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital and was diagnosed with a concussion and a broken nose.

* at Columbus 2, San Jose 1: Sergei Fedorov scored the decisive goal late in the second period, and the Blue Jackets won their third consecutive game.

* Toronto 4, at New York Rangers 1: Pavel Kubina’s first goal of the season started a three-goal binge against the stingy Rangers that carried the Maple Leafs to the victory.

* Carolina 8, at New York Islanders 3: Rod Brind’Amour notched the third hat trick of his career, Ray Whitney and Justin Williams each scored twice and the Hurricanes scored six times on their first 13 shots.

* Ottawa 4, at New Jersey 1: The Senators spoiled the Devils’ first game in the new Prudential Center, scoring three times in the third period. The Devils played their first nine games on the road while waiting for the $380-million arena to be completed.

* Montreal 4, at Pittsburgh 3: Andrei Markov scored in the eighth shootout round, and the Canadiens recovered from blowing an early three-goal lead.

* Buffalo 4, at Tampa Bay 3: Thomas Vanek scored late in overtime, and the Sabres rallied to beat the Lightning.

* at Nashville 4, Florida 3: With 13 seconds left in regulation, Radek Bonk skated behind the net and put the puck in on a backhand shot that bounced off the lower back of Jerred Smithson and into the net.

* Atlanta 3, at Chicago 2: Ilya Kovalchuk scored a tiebreaking goal early in the third period and set up Vyacheslav Kozlov’s two power-play scores for the Thrashers.

* at St. Louis 4, Washington 3: Brad Boyes had two goals, his second breaking a 2-2 tie in the second period for the Blues.

* Dallas 5, at Phoenix 3: The Stars’ Mike Modano had a goal and an assist to move to within three points of the NHL record for American-born players.

* at Kings 4, Edmonton 1: Patrick O’Sullivan had his first two-goal game, and the Kings won their fourth straight.
