Chopra earns first PGA Tour win

Daniel Chopra reclaimed the outright lead with a birdie at the par-five 16th hole Monday morning and held on to win the oft-delayed Ginn sur Mer Classic, beating Fredrik Jacobsen and Shigeki Maruyama by one shot at Tesoro Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

“It’s something that I’ve dreamed about for a long time,” Chopra said.

Chopra finished at 19 under, becoming the 12th first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season.

The win came in Chopra’s 133rd career start, and the $810,000 winner’s check pushed his career earnings to just shy of $5 million. His four-shot lead over his nearest pursuers evaporated as darkness fell on the course Sunday.

Maruyama earned $396,000 and vaulted from 137th to 103rd on the money list with only one tournament remaining, meaning he’s a cinch to finish among the top 125 and have full playing privileges next season.

Leslie starts tour with U.S. national team

Sparks center Lisa Leslie, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time WNBA most valuable player, will play for the U.S. national team, which opens its tour Wednesday against the University of Maryland.

Leslie, on maternity leave from the Sparks last season, has 3,222 points and 1,393 rebounds in 204 games with USA Basketball dating to 1989. The Sparks’ Taj McWilliams-Franklin also is on the U.S. roster.

The national team will play USC, Leslie’s alma mater, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. The tour ends Nov. 15 at Stanford.

Nevada sophomore forward Tyrone Hanson suffered an unspecified injury in a fight at a Halloween party in Reno in which three people were shot to death, the school said. He was treated at a hospital and released.

Kiprusoff, Flames agree to $35-million extension

Goalie Miikka Kiprusoff agreed to a $35-million, six-year extension with Calgary that will keep the 2006 Vezina Trophy winner with the Flames through the 2013-14 season.

Philadelphia defenseman Randy Jones was suspended two games by the NHL for his hit on Boston’s Patrice Bergeron on Saturday, making him the third Flyer suspended for a dangerous play this season.

Bergeron is still out after he was hammered to the boards face first by Jones in the first period of Philadelphia’s 2-1 victory over the Bruins.

NASCAR says water got into fuel supply

NASCAR said that water got into the fuel supply of more than two cars during the Pep Boys Auto 500 on Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, apparently leading to a crash that took out several top contenders in the closing laps.

John Darby, NASCAR’s Nextel Cup director, dismissed sabotage, saying too many teams were affected for anyone to have been singled out.

He said testing showed no signs of problems in the underground storage tanks at the speedway. The problem probably occurred in the piping that runs from the tanks to the pumps, or in the pumps.

World Cup rotation of continents ends

The World Cup will no longer be rotated among continents, a decision that throws open the race for the 2018 tournament. South Africa already has been awarded the 2010 tournament and FIFA, soccer’s governing body, today is expected to announce Brazil as the 2014 host.

Ancic rallies to beat Mathieu at Paris Masters

Mario Ancic defeated Paul-Henri Mathieu, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round of the Paris Masters, setting up a match against 2005 champion Tomas Berdych.

Mardy Fish fired 19 aces to beat Dmitry Tursunov, 7-6 (7), 6-4, and Marcos Baghdatis beat Juan Carlos Ferrero, 6-4, 6-2.

Vancouver organizers sign an agreement with U.N.

The organizing committee of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics signed a United Nations agreement as part of an effort to tout its commitment to the environment.

Under the agreement, the committee promises to come up with innovative ways to minimize the environmental footprint of major events before, during and after the Games.
