Leonard Horwin, 94; attorney and former Beverly Hills mayor
Leonard Horwin, 94, an attorney and former mayor of Beverly Hills, died Thursday at his Beverly Hills home from complications of pneumonia, his son Noel said.
Elected to the Beverly Hills City Council for a four-year term in 1962, Horwin served as mayor in 1964 and 1965.
He campaigned to maintain the city’s height limit on buildings, particularly for commercial development. While in office he worked to ensure that the city acquired Greystone Mansion, the home built by the Doheny family in the 1920s that was leased to the American Film Institute for many years.
Born in Chicago in 1913, Horwin came to Los Angeles as a child when his family moved west for his father’s real estate and building interests.
He graduated from UCLA in 1933 and from Yale Law School in 1936.
In Beverly Hills, Horwin established a general legal practice and was involved in numerous civic organizations.
