An appointee of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who supervised pet adoption issues stepped down from the five-member Animal Services Commission on Friday, saying she was disappointed in the man who runs the city’s animal shelters.

Maria Atake said Animal Services Department General Manager Ed Boks had caused several public relations mishaps, including plans for a “pit bull academy” in South Los Angeles. Atake also accused Villaraigosa of misrepresenting the agency’s achievements recently.

Mayoral spokeswoman Janelle Erickson released a statement thanking Atake for her service.
