LANG IN THE LOOP

Share
Special to The Times

Timed perfectly to fashion’s renewed interest in minimalism, Helmut Lang is opening its first free-standing boutique since the company was purchased in 2006 by Link Theory. Now that Lang himself is out of the picture, the collection is designed by Nicole and Michael Colovos, the duo behind premium denim label Habitual. True to Lang’s original urban aesthetic, there are plenty of layering pieces, double jackets, stovepipe trousers and lots of black, of course. The 2,600-square-foot space is also modern and cool, with glossy white wood, black glass and white leather.

8426 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles; (323) 951-0994. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mon.-Sat.; noon to 6 p.m. Sun.

Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills; (310) 858-6533. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon.-Sat.; noon to 5 p.m. Sun.

Gagosian Gallery Through Oct. 13: Contemporary artist Tom Sachs, famous for his biting takes on consumerist culture, has designed a long-sleeve T-shirt for Banana Republic to commemorate his latest exhibition, “NASA: Space Program,” running through Oct. 13 at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. The white tees, which will be sold exclusively through the Gagosian Galleries, have an astronaut-style American flag patch on the arm and a detailed illustration of a lunar module on the back. “The T-shirts are like the team jersey for the show,” said Sachs, who used foam core, hot glue and scavenged materials to create a tribute to the U.S. Apollo program for the exhibition. The T-shirt isn’t the show’s only fashion tie-in. Miuccia Prada collaborated with Sachs on lab coats; Mark Smith of Innovation Kitchen (a project group within Nike) created footwear inspired by the shoe that slips over astronauts’ boots; Martha Stewart whipped up some moon food; and Andy Spade of Jack Spade dressed Sachs and his team at the opening. Gagosian Gallery, 456 N. Camden Drive, Beverly Hills; (310) 271-9400; www.gagosian.com. 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tues.-Sat.
