False hopes litter search for Fossett

Hopes were briefly raised when rescue crews searching for adventurer Steve Fossett discovered what they thought was a downed airplane near where he took off Sept. 3.
But it wasn’t his plane and they found no trace of the missing aviator. At least six times during the search rescue crews have spotted wreckage they thought might be Fossett’s, only to learn it was from crashes years -- sometimes decades -- ago.
