Chicago White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen and the team agreed Tuesday to a contract extension through the 2012 season.

Guillen managed Chicago to a World Series title in 2005 and was voted AL manager of the year, but the White Sox slid from contention early this season and are 61-84, tied with Tampa Bay for the worst record in the major leagues. He has held the job since November 2003.

St. Louis outfielder Chris Duncan will be sidelined for at least 10 days because of a hernia that probably will need surgery, costing the Cardinals another player for their stretch run.

Third baseman Scott Rolen also had surgery to clean out his left shoulder. Rolen, who throws right-handed, is expected to be ready for spring training. He went on the disabled list Aug. 31.

Duncan has been bothered by a sore groin for several months. He aggravated it while running the bases in the fifth inning of a loss in Arizona on Saturday, and returned to St. Louis for an exam.

Rookie left-hander Neal Musser will miss the rest of the season after breaking his right little finger punching a chair in the Kansas City Royals’ clubhouse following a Monday game against Minnesota in which he retired only one of four batters.

Shortstop John McDonald and the Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a $3.8-million, two-year contract extension through the 2009 season.

Former Houston Astros general manager Bob Watson interviewed for his old job along with current assistant GM David Gottfried.

Houston has interviewed nine potential GMs since owner Drayton McLane fired Tim Purpura -- along with manager Phil Garner -- on Aug. 27.
