* at Cleveland 5, Kansas City 4: Casey Blake homered to left on David Riske’s first pitch in the ninth inning to move the Indians closer to the Central Division title. The win lowered their magic number for clinching the title to 10. Blake hadn’t homered in 36 games -- a span of 144 at-bats -- since Aug. 1.

* Baltimore 6, at Toronto 2: Brian Burres pitched seven shutout innings to win for the first time since July 28. The Orioles won consecutive games for the first time since Aug. 14-15 and came within three outs of recording consecutive shutouts for the first time this season. The loss eliminated the Blue Jays from contention in the East Division.

* Detroit 4, at Minnesota 2: Nate Robertson won for the first time in six starts, and the Tigers started a crucial trip by winning for the eighth time in 11 games and staying within 5 1/2 games of Cleveland in the Central Division. Matt Garza fell to 0-10 in 11 starts at the Metrodome, and the defending division champion Twins dropped to 14 games back with 15 to play.

* at Oakland 11, Texas 9: Sammy Sosa’s 608th home run and five runs batted in weren’t enough for the Rangers. Nick Swisher hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning after the Athletics rallied from a six-run deficit.

* at Seattle 2, Tampa Bay 1: Jose Guillen’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the ninth inning scored Ichiro Suzuki from third, and the Mariners won their third in a row. Seattle has won three straight games in its final plate appearance after dropping 15 of its previous 17.

* New York 8, at Boston 7: Alex Rodriguez capped a six-run eighth inning with a tiebreaking single against Jonathan Papelbon, and the Yankees overcame a five-run deficit.

* at Chicago 5, Angels 3: Bartolo Colon is 0-5 in his last seven starts, and has not won since beating Cincinnati on June 14.
