at New York 7, Toronto 5: Mike Mussina (11-10) won his 250th game, backup catcher Jose Molina had three hits and three RBIs and Joba Chamberlain got his first career save on his 22nd birthday to help the Yankees pull to within 11/2 games of Boston atop the East Division.

at Tampa Bay 5, Boston 4: Struggling Tim Wakefield (16-12) gave up a two-run homer to Delmon Young in the loss. He has yielded 21 runs over 17 2/3 innings in his last four starts. Edwin Jackson (5-15) had a one-hitter through five innings, but failed to get out of the sixth when the Red Sox scored three times to make the score 4-3.

at Detroit 7, Kansas City 2: Justin Verlander earned his 18th win, Marcus Thames homered twice and the Tigers won on the day they were eliminated from the Central Division race. The defending league champions still have an outside shot at the wild card, but they need a New York collapse in the final week.

at Minnesota 7, Chicago 1: Garrett Jones hit his first career home run, Michael Cuddyer drove in four runs and Kevin Slowey (4-0) struck out a career-high nine for the Twins. Torii Hunter, a free-agent outfielder playing perhaps his final home game for the Twins, went one for three and scored twice.

at Texas 3, Baltimore 0: Kevin Millwood (10-13) pitched seven scoreless innings to improve to 5-0 against the Orioles in his two seasons with the Rangers. Joaquin Benoit and C.J. Wilson each pitched an inning in relief. The Orioles were shut out for the fourth time this season -- all in September.

at Cleveland 6, Oakland 2: The Athletics (75-82) guaranteed that they will not finish with a winning record for the first time in nine seasons by losing for the 18th time in their last 28 games.

at Angels 7, Seattle 4: The Mariners, who last made the playoffs in 2001 when they won the division with a club-record 116 victories, fell to 39-41 on the road, four games worse than last season.
