* New York 3, at Tampa Bay 1: Phil Hughes (5-3) kept alive New York’s slim title hopes in the American League East, giving up four hits in seven innings, and Jose Molina delivered a two-run single in the Yankees’ victory. Jose Veras pitched the ninth, completing a six-hitter for his second career save.

* at Seattle 4, Cleveland 2: Jose Guillen and Jose Lopez each hit two-run homers to back Cha Seung Baek, and the Mariners prevented the Indians from taking sole possession of the best record in the AL.

* Minnesota 5, at Boston 4: Michael Cuddyer and Garrett Jones homered off 20-game winner Josh Beckett in his last start before the playoffs, preventing the Red Sox from closing in on an AL East title. Beckett (20-7) gave up five runs and 10 hits in six innings, striking out six.

* at Baltimore 8, Toronto 5: Luis Hernandez hit his first major league homer in the sixth inning and the Orioles avoided a three-game sweep.

* at Chicago 10, Kansas City 0: Lance Broadway gave up two hits over six innings for his first major league victory. Paul Konerko hit a three-run homer for the White Sox, who have won seven of 11 games.
