The World Umpires Assn. will not contest the season-ending suspension given to Mike Winters for using a vulgarity aimed at San Diego’s Milton Bradley on Sunday.

“I’ve spoken with Mike Winters, and he sincerely regrets what happened on the field that day,” union spokesman Lamell McMorris said. “Sometimes, regrettable situations just come out of nowhere and spiral out of control, and everyone involved later wishes that the entire thing can be undone and everyone can go back to the beginning and start over.”

McMorris said Winters does not plan to telephone Bradley, who tore a knee ligament when Padres Manager Bud Black spun him to the ground to keep him from going after the umpire during a 7-3 loss to Colorado in San Diego.

Winters will not work during the postseason, a baseball official said.

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Seth McClung was suspended for three games and Manager Ned Yost for one after the commissioner’s office concluded the pitcher intentionally hit the St. Louis Cardinals’ Albert Pujols with a pitch Wednesday after a warning had been issued.

The two-game suspension of the New York Mets’ Marlon Anderson was upheld. Anderson drew a fine and suspension when he threw his batting helmet toward home plate from the dugout after he was ejected in the ninth inning of a 5-3 loss to Philadelphia on Sept. 15.

General Manager Bill Bavasi and Manager John McLaren will retain their jobs with the Seattle Mariners.
