at Cincinnati 3, Arizona 2: Johnny Cueto yielded only Justin Upton’s solo homer in seven innings, striking out 10 in an overpowering debut. The 22-year-old right-hander struck out eight of his first 13 batters. His 10 strikeouts were the most by a Reds pitcher in his major league debut since 1900, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

at St. Louis 3, Colorado 0: The Cardinals took two of three from the defending National League champions, who totaled five runs in the series and managed only one in 16 2/3 innings against St. Louis starters. Colorado was three for 25 with runners in scoring position. “It’s a good way to start the season, as good a club as that club is,” Cardinals Manager Tony La Russa said. “Very impressive.”

at San Diego 3, Houston 2: Randy Wolf made his debut for the Padres, starting for the first time since July 3 while with the Dodgers because of soreness in his left shoulder. He had surgery in September, when doctors cleaned out the joint and shaved his frayed labrum. He held the Astros to one run and four hits in six innings, struck out five and walked two.
