San Jose gets even with Calgary, 2-0

Evgeni Nabokov made 21 saves in his sixth career postseason shutout and rookie Torrey Mitchell scored a power-play goal Thursday night to help San Jose to a 2-0 victory over the Calgary Flames at San Jose, evening their first-round series at a game apiece.

Joe Pavelski also scored an early goal for the Sharks, who outshot the penalty-prone Flames by a huge margin -- 43-21 this time -- for the second time in 24 hours.

Calgary beat San Jose, 3-2, in Game 1 on Wednesday night despite a 16-shot disadvantage.

Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 41 shots for the Flames, who labored on the penalty-kill for nearly 10 minutes of the second period, in which San Jose outshot Calgary, 27-3 -- but didn’t score until Mitchell’s goal in the waning seconds of that power-play time.

Detroit 3, Nashville 1 -- Henrik Zetterberg ended a tie at 6:54 of the third period and had an empty-net goal, lifting the Red Wings at Detroit.

Dominik Hasek, playing in his 116th playoff game, made 19 saves for the Red Wings and Dan Ellis stopped 37 shots for the Predators.

Montreal 4, Boston 1 -- The Kostitsyn brothers, Sergei and Andrei, scored goals 1:28 apart early and Carey Price stopped 17 shots in the Canadiens’ victory at Montreal.

Bryan Smolinski and Tom Kostopoulos also scored for the Canadiens.

Jacques Martin will not serve as the Florida Panthers coach next season, the Miami Herald reported. Martin has been Florida’s general manager and its coach and is likely to stay in the general manager’s role. . . . Craig Leipold officially took over as owner of the Minnesota Wild, completing the purchase of the team from Bob Naegele in the middle of the first-round playoff series against Colorado.
