John Madden scored 6:01 into overtime to get the New Jersey Devils back into their first-round playoff series against the New York Rangers with a 4-3 victory Sunday night at Madison Square Garden.

New Jersey beat the Rangers for only the second time in 11 games this season, and will look to tie the Eastern Conference series in Game 4 on Wednesday night. The series will then shift back to New Jersey on Friday.

Madden took a faceoff to the right of Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, and the puck slid into the corner. Madden got to the loose puck and centered it. It clipped the right skate of Rangers rookie defenseman Marc Staal and caromed in.

“I’m not going to lie. It was a lot of luck,” Madden said. “I thought Sergei [Brylin] might be there, but their guy was standing there. It hit him in the foot and went in. It was real lucky, but we need to get those breaks to get back into the series.”

The Devils dominated the extra period, outshooting New York, 5-1, and ended a franchise-worst five-game playoff losing streak.

“In the overtime, we weren’t thinking. We were just going,” forward Zach Parise said. “We wanted to get this win. We had a lot of great chances.”

New Jersey never had the lead in dropping the first two games of the series at home but held it three times in Game 3.

Brylin made it 1-0 in the first period, and Patrik Elias and Parise scored power-play goals 2:23 apart in the second.

Rangers rookie Brandon Dubinsky scored his first two career playoff goals, getting New York even at 1-1 and 3-3. Sean Avery scored for the third straight game and continued to be a pest to goalie Martin Brodeur, and Jaromir Jagr had three assists.

Philadelphia 2, Washington 0 -- The visiting Flyers shut down Alex Ovechkin and got first-period goals from R.J. Umberger and Jeff Carter to even their series at 1-1. Martin Biron had 24 saves for Philadelphia.

Boston 2, Montreal 1 (OT) -- Marc Savard came off the bench on a delayed penalty to score with 9:25 gone in overtime and the host Bruins won Game 3, their first victory over the Canadiens in 11 games this season.

Tim Thomas made 27 saves for Boston, which trails in the series, 2-1.

Calgary 4, San Jose 3 -- Owen Nolan scored with 3:45 left as the host Flames rallied from a three-goal deficit early in the first period and beat the Sharks for a 2-1 series lead.

Ryane Clowe, Patrick Marleau and Doug Murray scored in the first 3:33 against Miikka Kiprusoff.

Veteran backup Curtis Joseph replaced Kiprusoff and shut down the Sharks the rest of the way.
