Ex-councilman is sentenced

Former Anaheim City Councilman Richard Chavez was sentenced to three years’ probation Monday for intentionally failing to pay $8,591 in taxes for 2003.

“The sentence . . . was fair,” his lawyer, Paul S. Meyer, said in a statement. “Richard Chavez has devoted his life to public service on behalf of the less fortunate. He is now able to move forward to continue to benefit needy members of the community.”

Chavez, who was elected to the council in 2002 and lost his bid for reelection by 200 votes in 2006, had pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion last year.
