Waters will back Parks in race
City Councilman Bernard C. Parks will receive the endorsement of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) today in the race to replace retiring Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke in District 2.
Waters’ endorsement is considered significant in a crowded race that has two well-known and well-funded candidates: Parks and state Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-Los Angeles).
Waters is regarded as one of South Los Angeles’ most powerful and popular leaders.
The central county district extends from mid-Los Angeles south to Carson.
Parks has thus far received the backing of three county supervisors, including Burke, as well as several of his City Council colleagues.
Ridley-Thomas has also collected powerful endorsements, including those of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and several law enforcement unions.
