Haywood avoids suspension

Washington Wizards center Brendan Haywood, ejected for a flagrant foul on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James in Monday’s Game 2 loss, was not suspended by the league Tuesday for the act.

Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett won the NBA’s defensive player of the year award, receiving 90 first-place votes and 493 points from a media panel to beat out Denver’s Marcus Camby (178) and Houston’s Shane Battier (175).

Charging that the buyers of the SuperSonics “were willing to lie, and did lie” about their intentions to keep the team in Seattle, former owner Howard Schultz filed suit seeking to undo the $350-million sale to an Oklahoma City group. . . . Fired coach Isiah Thomas was banned from having any contact with New York Knicks players as part of his reassignment agreement as an advisor to President Donnie Walsh, the New York Daily News reported.
