* at Houston 11, San Diego 7: Kaz Matsui’s two-run single in the eighth inning lifted the Astros. Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy gave up four earned runs, matching the total for his four previous starts combined. The Padres ace gave up seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings. The Astros have won three games in a row for the first time this season.

* Philadelphia 8, at Colorado 6: Pat Burrell’s bases-clearing double against Manny Corpas in the ninth inning helped the Phillies sweep a two-game series against the team that swept them in the first round of the playoffs last season.

* at Pittsburgh 3, Florida 2: Xavier Nady’s two-run single completed a three-run Pirates rally. Pittsburgh ended a six-game losing streak.

* at Chicago 8, New York 1: Ronny Cedeno hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, Ted Lilly won for the first time in five starts, and the surging Cubs won for the 13th time in 16 games.

* Washington 6, at Atlanta 0: Rookie John Lannan (1-2) gave up five hits in seven innings and outpitched John Smoltz to help the Nationals end a three-game losing streak. Washington had lost six of seven and is only 3-15 since winning its first three games.

* at Milwaukee 9, St. Louis 8 (12 innings): Gabe Kapler singled home the winning run with one out and the Brewers overcame another blown save by Eric Gagne. The Brewers wasted a five-run lead before Kapler’s hit.

* at Arizona 5, San Francisco 4: Brandon Webb (5-0), off to the best start of his career, beat Barry Zito (0-5) for the second time in six days.

* at Cincinnati 8, Dodgers 1: Jerry Hairston Jr. had four hits in his debut as the Reds’ leadoff batter, and Adam Dunn and Brandon Phillips each homered.
