NFL draft

N.Y. GIANTS: The Super Bowl champions have the last pick in the first round and could use it to take a safety -- maybe Miami’s Kenny Phillips -- to replace the departed Gibril Wilson. Wide receiver is also a need, considering the age of Amani Toomer, the injury problems of Plaxico Burress, and the so-so production of Sinorice Moss. The Giants also need to find a linebacker to help compensate for the loss of Kawika Mitchell.

DALLAS: With two picks in the first round -- Nos. 22 and 28 -- the Cowboys have the ability to do some serious negotiating, and, if they like, move up to the top of the draft to grab an elite player such as Arkansas running back Darren McFadden. That said, they do have needs they could address quite well where they are, at running back and cornerback. They also need a receiver, seeing as both Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn are 35.

PHILADELPHIA: The Eagles got an outstanding cornerback through free agency, former New England star Asante Samuel, but they could still use another one. They should be able to get a very good corner with the No. 19 pick, although they instead might choose to address their needs for an offensive tackle and a safety who can eventually replace Brian Dawkins. Remember this: The Eagles have a rich history of using the draft to fortify their offensive and defensive fronts.

WASHINGTON: The cupboard is fairly well-stocked for new Coach Jim Zorn, but the Redskins need to build depth at various positions. Most pressing is the need for defensive linemen, particularly because of the age of current anchors Phillip Daniels and Cornelius Griffin. They could also use a receiver or two, seeing as Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El accounted for only four touchdowns last season.
