Major league manager, coach
Karl Kuehl, 70, a baseball manager, scout and expert on player development, died Wednesday of pulmonary fibrosis in a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital.
Kuehl was the manager of the Montreal Expos in 1976, posting a 43-85 record before being fired with two months left in the season.
He went on to serve six seasons as a base coach with the Minnesota Twins, then spent 12 years as head of player development for the Oakland Athletics before becoming assistant to the team’s general manager. Players that came out of the A’s system during those years included Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Miguel Tejada and Walt Weiss.
Kuehl was born Sept. 5, 1937, in Monterey Park. He was a minor league first baseman in the Cincinnati Reds organization. He rose to the AAA level in the Pacific Coast League and began his managing career at 21 with the Salem, Ore., Senators.
