Izturis probably headed for the DL

CLEVELAND -- Just as Maicer Izturis was getting back into the swing of things, the Angels’ shortstop appears headed to the disabled list because of a left thumb injury he aggravated diving for a grounder in the ninth inning against Seattle on Wednesday night.

Izturis sprained the thumb in an Aug. 1 game at New York, and though he missed eight of the next nine games, the switch-hitter didn’t go on the DL.

He started Wednesday night and had three hits, including two doubles and a run batted in, and two runs against the Mariners before leaving the game in the ninth.

With infielder Sean Rodriguez already on the bench and able to back up shortstop Erick Aybar, the Angels are expected to recall switch-hitting first baseman Kendry Morales from triple-A Salt Lake to fill Izturis’ roster spot.

Morales missed five weeks of the season because of an oblique injury but is batting .333 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs in 69 games.
