Moyer beats fellow old-timer Maddux
SAN DIEGO -- Jamie Moyer outpitched fellow 40-something Greg Maddux for seven innings, Pat Burrell homered and the Philadelphia Phillies ended a four-game skid with a 1-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night.
Moyer (11-7), who gave up three hits, allowed only one runner to reach third base. Maddux (6-9) gave up a run and five hits.
Burrell homered in the seventh inning. He is batting .340 (15 for 44) against Maddux with three homers and nine RBIs.
The matchup between the 45-year-old Moyer and 42-year-old Maddux was the oldest by combined ages (88 years, 30 days) of starting pitchers since June 21, 2007, when Moyer and David Wells (88 years, 308 days) faced each other at Petco Park, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
