Red Wings slip past the Ducks

Marian Hossa knew if the Detroit Red Wings kept shooting, the puck would finally go in.

And it did, on a shot by Hossa early in the third period that gave Detroit a 2-1 win over the Ducks on Monday night. The Red Wings outshot the Ducks, 47-16.

Johan Franzen also scored for Detroit and Chris Osgood made 15 saves.

“We tried to stay patient. We were, I think, all over them and we outshot them,” Hossa said. “It was just a matter of time” until they scored again.

Chris Kunitz scored the Ducks’ goal and Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 37 shots before being removed after two periods because of a tight groin muscle.

Ducks Coach Randy Carlyle said he “decided after two periods that [Giguere] had seen enough rubber for one game and not take a chance.”

Jonas Hiller made eight saves in the third period as the Ducks had their four-game winning streak ended.

Hossa got the winner 1:48 into the third period when he beat Hiller from the right circle to convert a two-on-one pass from Dan Cleary.

“Clears had the puck and I just tried to wait for him and I knew it was a matter of time when he was going to make the pass to me,” Hossa said. “Basically I just tried to shoot at the net and I think it surprised the goalie by the five-hole.”

Hossa hesitated before shooting, which threw Hiller off.

“I was expecting a one-timer and I was already down,” Hiller said.

Kunitz opened the scoring 1:50 into the game on the Ducks’ first shot, when he stuffed in the puck from beside the net for his fifth goal. It was set up by Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart’s giveaway behind his net.

Franzen tied it, 1-1, with 5:34 left in the second period -- on Detroit’s 32nd shot of the game -- when he tipped in Nicklas Lidstrom’s shot from the point out of midair and past Giguere for his 11th goal.
