Giants get Randy Johnson

Randy Johnson and the San Francisco Giants agreed to an $8-million, one-year contract Friday, meaning the 45-year-old pitcher will go for his 300th win with a new team.

Johnson, a 21-year big league veteran who spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, was born in Walnut Creek, about 30 minutes from the Giants’ park. He grew up in nearby Livermore.

The five-time Cy Young Award winner has 295 victories after going 11-10 with a 3.91 earned-run average in 30 starts last season.

He can earn an additional $5 million in performance bonuses.

Johnson joins fellow Cy Young winners Tim Lincecum (2008) and Barry Zito (2002). San Francisco becomes the first team with three Cy Young Award winners since the 2002 Atlanta Braves with Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and John Smoltz.

Boston Red Sox infielder Kevin Youkilis will accept an invitation to play on Team USA in the World Baseball Classic in March, the Boston Globe reported.

Marshall re-signs with Crew

Chad Marshall has re-signed with the Major League Soccer champion Columbus Crew, agreeing to a multiyear contract.

Marshall, who is from Riverside, was the 2008 MLS defender of the year.

Carlos Tevez scored late to give Manchester United a 1-0 win at Stoke on what looked like a tired return to the English Premier League by the defending champions.

United wasn’t in top form after winning the Club World Cup in Japan.

Liverpool and Chelsea also won their first post-Christmas games. Liverpool stayed at the top of the standings with a 3-0 win over Bolton, and Chelsea beat West Bromwich Albion, 2-0, to remain a point back in second.

U.S. romps in junior opener

James van Riemsdyk and Drayson Bowman scored two goals each for the United States, which opened the world junior hockey championship with an 8-2 rout of Germany at Ottawa.

Mitch Wahl of Seal Beach had two assists.

Defending champion Canada rolled to an 8-1 win over the Czech Republic. Russian topped Latvia, 4-1, and Sweden beat Finland, 3-1.

American skier TJ Lanning crashed at high speed during training for a World Cup downhill at Bormio, Italy, and was ruled out of racing this weekend.

Mixed martial arts fighter Justin Mark Eilers was shot to death during a domestic disturbance in Nampa, Idaho, police said. He was 30.

James Robert Malec, 48, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.
