Man held after standoff at home

A 58-year-old Cerritos man was undergoing mental evaluation Friday after he called police Thursday and falsely claimed that he had shot his son and was holding other family members hostage, authorities said.

The man called 911 about 10:15 p.m. demanding that paramedics come to his home in the 17200 block of Ibex Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. When deputies, mental evaluators, a SWAT team and a helicopter arrived at the residence, the man refused to talk with them. Later, he made a second call to deputies complaining that there were too many people gathered outside his house.

After a two-hour standoff, authorities entered the house about midnight and discovered no victims or weapons. Authorities said it appeared the man was distraught over an upcoming trial concerning his adult son, who was killed two years ago. The man was placed on a 72-hour mental evaluation hold.
