Man dies in leap from overpass

Share

A man died in an apparent suicide Friday morning after he jumped from an overpass onto the 101 Freeway in Hollywood and was struck by vehicles, authorities said.

Witnesses said a man in his 60s leaped from the Wilton Place crossing over the northbound lanes near Sunset Boulevard about 8:30 a.m., said Brian Humphrey, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. California Highway Patrol officials closed the two right lanes on the northbound 101 for about three hours, said CHP Officer Jose Nunez.

Nearly a dozen witnesses called 911 to say the man jumped and had not been pushed or hit by a car on the overpass, Humphrey said.

CHP and Los Angeles Police Department officers investigating the incident concluded it appeared to be a suicide and not an accident, said Officer Jason Lee, an LAPD spokesman. Lee said an autopsy will be conducted.

No one else was injured, and the man was apparently alone, Humphrey said.
