Sorenstam wins 70th LPGA title

Annika Sorenstam won the season-opening SBS Open for her 70th LPGA Tour title and first since September 2006, birdieing two of the last three holes Saturday at Kahuku, Hawaii, for a three-under-par 69 and a two-stroke victory.

The 37-year-old Swedish star, coming off an injury-shortened season during which she failed to win for the first time since her rookie season in 1994, finished with a 10-under 206 total.

Rookie Russy Gulyanamitta (68), Laura Diaz (70) and Jane Park (70) tied for second. Angela Park (69), the 2007 rookie of the year, and rookie Momoko Ueda (71) tied for fifth, three strokes behind.

Sorenstam opened with a 70 on Turtle Bay’s Arnold Palmer Course and took a share of the lead with a 67 on Friday.

Tom Jenkins moved into position to become the 18th player 60 or older to win a Champions Tour event, shooting an eight-under 64 to take a two-stroke lead over five players in the ACE Group Classic at Naples, Fla..

The 60-year-old Jenkins had a 12-under 132 total. Scott Hoch had a 66 to join Nick Price (66), Ron Streck (66), Gary Koch (67) and Peter Jacobsen (68) at 10 under.

Liverpool ousted from FA Cup after 2-1 loss

Seven-time English FA Cup champion Liverpool was knocked out of the competition in a 2-1 loss to lower-league club Barnsley.

Brian Howard scored the winning goal in the 90th minute of the fifth-round match that put Barnsley into the quarterfinals. Dirk Kuyt had put the Reds ahead, before Stephen Foster tied it for Barnsley, which is mid-table in the second-tier League Championship.

Barnsley has won the FA Cup once -- in 1912 -- and finished second two years before that.

In other FA Cup matches, Manchester United beat Arsenal, 4-0, despite finishing with 10 men after Emmanuel Eboue was sent off in the 49th minute, and Frank Lampard scored in the 18th and 60th minutes to help defending champion Chelsea beat League One club Huddersfield, 3-1.

Nishikori reaches first ATP Tour final

Qualifier Kei Nishikori reached his first ATP Tour final by upsetting third-seeded Sam Querrey, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7), in the semifinals of the Delray Beach International in Florida.

Trailing, 6-3, in the tiebreaker, the 18-year-old saved four match points before winning on his first chance to close out the match with Querrey serving at 7-8.

Nishikori will play top-seeded James Blake, who defeated wild-card entry Robby Ginepri, 6-4, 6-4.

Top-ranked Justine Henin reached the final of the Diamond Games at Antwerp, Belgium, rallying to defeat qualifier Timea Bacsinszky, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. She will play Karin Knapp, who beat ninth-seeded Na Li, 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Mario Ancic upset sixth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the final of the Open 13 at Marseille, France. He will play fourth-seeded Andy Murray, who defeated eighth-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu, 6-2, 6-2

Kiriasis makes history with third title in a row

Sandra Kiriasis led a German medals sweep at Altenberg, Germany, and became the first woman to win the two-man title at three consecutive bobsled World Championships.

The Olympic champion and Romy Logsch led the first German medals sweep in the event at the worlds since 2003, compiling a four-run time of 3 minutes 49.50 seconds. Cathleen Martini and Janine Tischer finished 0.26 of a second behind, and Claudia Schramm and Nicole Herschmann were third in 3:50.82.

Joji Kato handed Jeremy Wotherspoon his first defeat this season at 500 meters in a World Cup speedskating meet at Inzell, Germany.

Kato, the former world record holder from Japan, was timed in 35.48 seconds to beat Wotherspoon (35.61), ending the Canadian’s streak of six World Cup wins.

American Shani Davis won the 1,000 in 1 minute 10.58 seconds. Canada’s Denny Morrison was second in 1:11.03.

BOXING

Valuev earns title shot by beating Liakhovich

Nikolai Valuev earned a shot at the World Boxing Assn. heavyweight title by winning a unanimous decision over Sergei Liakhovich at Nuremberg, Germany.

Valuev (48-1) earned a rematch against Ruslan Chagaev, the first to beat him as a pro and the man who took away his WBA belt in April.

Bekele sets world indoor two-mile mark

Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia set a world record in the indoor two-mile run at the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham, England.

Bekele was timed in 8:04.35 seconds, taking 0.34 off the mark of 8:04.69 that countryman Haile Gebrselassie set in February 2003.
